Writing your last Will or Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can be considered as one of the most difficult, but important things to do. It is a witnessed and a signed document in written form, which specifies who will get the ownership of your possessions, after your death or, in the case of LPAs, who can make decisions about your finances, property and health before your death. Only the original copies will be accepted and therefore, it is extremely important to protect them from certain risks, for example, fire, flood, loss and theft to name but a few.
After you have written your Will or LPA, it is important to consider the safe storage of these documents.
The copies of your last Will or LPA are not accepted legally because they do not have your original signature on them and are not witnessed.
One place you should never think about storing your Will or LPA is at home. Even if your Will is only damaged and not destroyed, the courts can still declare your Will invalid.
